A 57-year-old patient from Niger was presented to Wockhardt Hospitals, South Mumbai with severe back pain, tingling/ numbness in her both limbs with radiating pain. She was a known case of arthritis too. The patient was on conservative treatment and physiotherapy for the past year but did not seem to get any relief. Her condition worsened and progressed to neurogenic claudication – the most common symptom of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and describes intermittent leg pain from an impingement of the nerves emanating from the spinal cord

The patient contacted Wockhardt Hospitals, India through the internet and got complete support from the international team of the hospital. The patient decided to travel to India and get treated at one of the best multispecialty hospitals in Mumbai – Wockhardt Hospitals. She was admitted under one of the best, an experienced, and internationally trained neurosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, South Mumbai – Dr. Mazda Turel.

As per standard protocol, the patient was screened for infection – covid 19 and upon negative confirmation underwent thorough investigations for the diagnosis. A spine x-ray and MRI of the lumbar spine region were advised. The investigation report clearly showed a change of degeneration of the lumbar-sacral region, canal stenosis, and prolapse of the intervertebral disc which showed bulges. All pointing to the diagnosis of lumbar stenosis with spondylotic changes.

This lady underwent a laminectomy surgery of L3 – L5 and decompression surgery of stenosis. The surgery was successful with great post-operative recovery. The patient was discharged without any neurological deficits.

Upon flying back to her home country, she is advised to stay in touch and follow up online after every 3 months and continue medications for the advised duration. The requisite medicines were provided from the hospital to avoid any change in the medicinal molecule.

Multiple life wins at Wockhardt Hospitals and we aim to bring smiles to each and every patient and their family members.
