Over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes. The most common non communicable disease affecting India today is Diabetes Mellitus. It is a metabolic disorder, in which an individual has an increased level of blood sugar.

As per research, it currently affects an estimated 143 million people worldwide and the number is growing rapidly.

The theme this year is the role Families have to play in addressing the modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes. They must therefore be provided with the education, resources and environments to provide a healthy lifestyle.

All family members should be aware of the signs and symptoms associated with the disease and risk factors as well as the importance of early detection. Early detection can prevent complications.

Effective Managing and monitoring diabetes patients with in the family plays a vital role in families in diabetes effectively. This could refer to insulin and anti-diabetic drugs, dosage timely administration monitoring the same and seeing for side effects.

Apart from this health balanced diet and exercise should be part of the overall care for patients with diabetes as well as preventable routines for those not detected. Life style modifications and ingoing education should be a constant focus by family members.

Family support in diabetes care has been shown to have a substantial effect in improving health outcomes for people with diabetes. It is therefore important that ongoing diabetes self-management education and support be accessible to all people with diabetes Mellitus and their families to reduce the emotional impact of the disease and improve the quality of life.
