Breast Augmentation Surgery

As a primary reconstruction, augmentation mammoplasty is applied to effect a post–mastectomy breast reconstruction, the repair of the chest wound consequent to the removal of a cancerous breast; to correct congenital defects of the breast(s); and to correct congenital defects of the chest wall. As an elective, cosmetic surgery, primary augmentation changes the aesthetics of size, shape, and texture of healthy breasts. The surgical implantation approach effects the global augmentation of the breast hemisphere using a breast implant, either an implant filled with saline-solution or an implant filled with silicone-gel. The surgical augmentation approach includes transplantation autologous skin flaps harvested from the woman’s own body. The woman with breast implants is able to breast-feed her infant; yet breast implant devices do cause functional breast-feeding difficulties. Therefore, it is recommended that prior to the surgery the woman consults a lactation specialist and with the plastic surgeon to jointly decide upon the implantation procedure and surgical techniques that will least damage the nerves, tissues, ducts so that she might able to nurse her infant child.

Steps taken:

A breast augmentation procedure is under general anesthesia. The primary reconstruction of the breast is usually done with the a help of breast implants to further address the problem of incised breast tissues, sagging skin and loose, hanging breasts or any other deformities which can be corrected.

Once sedated, the incisions are made to minimise visible scarring in the areas that be conspicuous or not easily visible. Type and number of incisions depend on the type of breast implant, degree of enlargement desired, patient’s anatomical features and the preference expressed by the patient and feasibility as the surgeon to achieve the desired outcome.

After the incisions are made, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (a sub- muscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle.

The method for inserting and positioning breast implants depends on the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired body type and surgeon’s recommendations. Once the implant is fixed, the incisions are closed with layered sutures. The incisions are closed with appropriate dressing to prevent any infections and helps is healing.

These procedures are also known as breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty.

The procedure results in

Increase fullness and projection of the woman’s breasts

balances the figure in terms of aesthetics and sexual appeal

Enhance your self-image and self-confidence

Precautions:

Like any other surgical procedure patient must clarify all the doubts and concerns with the surgeon. The patient should discuss openly the expectations from the procedure planned and should take into account the opinion of the surgeon in the possibilities of meeting these expectations. All the physiological parameters must be stable and within normal limits. The medical history, details of the concomitant medications must be shared with surgeon so that he can appropriately take into account any additional precautions that might be necessary. At all times, follow doctor’s advice. Patient must remember that breast augmentation does not correct the severely drooping breasts and breast lift surgeries in conjunction with augmentations are necessary.

Advantages:

Breast augmentation helps increase the size, change the shape, and alter the texture of the breasts of a woman for medical reasons and/ or for aesthetic reasons.
