Neurological disorders through a gender lens | FEMOAI

In many neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS), gender-based differences have been documented and these differences have been shown to affect the prevalence of the disease, the presentation of symptoms and diagnosis, the progression of the disease as well as the response to treatment.

A long history of under representation of women in clinical studies means that even today many of these gender-based differences are unknown or poorly recognized. In this discussion we shed light on some of these differences and how increasing awareness within patients and the medical community is key to achieving gender equality when it comes to healthcare.
